Books For Children: 5-6 years

Our favourite books for children, aged 5 – 6 years, as part of our books for children list.

The Story of the Little Mole Who Knew it Was None of His Business by Werner Holzwarth
Just when it seems we had got past a silly stage, this book came along and gave us an extra dollop (pun absolutely intended!). I won’t spoil the storyline for you, but it is a silly and enjoyable read.

Six Dinner Sid by Inga Moore
Anyone who has ever been owned by a cat will find humour in this story of Sid moving between homes to find comfy spots and extra dinners. We also found that it was a nice book for early readers, adding some diversity to some of the reading scheme books that seem popular at the moment.

Dogger by Shirley Hughes
This brings back fond memories for me, being the favourite book of one of my sisters. It is just as enjoyable now and is a story I would happily read every night!

The Bear and the Piano by David Litchfield
The saying goes that home is where the heart is, and this story has a similar central theme. It creates an adventure that just doesn’t feel complete without the bear’s friends. On his return to the forest, the bear finds that they have taken part in his journey after all.

Moomin and the New Friend
(based on the original stories) by Tove Jansson
The Moomins are another set of characters who are timeless, and we love this story about friendship and expanding your circle of friends without anyone being replaced or forgotten.
