Events in Birmingham - blue sky over Millennium Point

This year’s summer holiday may feel slightly shorter than others, but wow am I noticing that I’m having to up my parenting game to keep the boys occupied! I have been searching high and low for slightly more unusual activities that might keep us all going this year which has included throwing the net a little further and searching for events in Birmingham. Birmingham is a relatively short train journey away from our home town so it’s easy to get to and has so much going on!

Where are events held in Birmingham?

Birmingham events are spread across its metropolitan district, but if you venture into the centre you are sure to find plenty to entertain the whole family. Sometimes known for its nightlife, with raves, discos and gigs aplenty, there are still options with unique entertainment value for younger family members. This year I have taken my middle son to the gorgeous Hippodrome which is very close to the Bullring to watch Birmingham Royal Ballet’s Swan Lake. The Town Hall often hosts events as do the Symphony Hall and Utilita Arena. A short train hop or 20 minute walk can take you over to Digbeth which hosts Roller Jam roller skating sessions. There are ‘turn down’ versions of this event too with lower sound volumes and no smoke cannons.

A little further out is Stoer Studio, home to puppy yoga (side note, this sounds adorable and I might go without the kids!). Edgbaston Cricket Ground is south of the city. Aside from cricket matches (pretty obviously held here!) the Digbeth Dining Club is also visiting this summer with street food, night markets and live music.

Activities in Birmingham

Alongside the above mentioned activities in Birmingham, are multiple attractions in the city suitable for all ages. Cadbury World is not far from the centre, or you might choose to take a walking tour and learn more about the history including a walk along the canal. Treetop Adventure Golf was a big hit with my 10 year old when we went earlier this year, and I am sure my 8 and 12 year olds would enjoy it too. Thinking more specifically about events in Birmingham West Midlands Police Museum is in the city centre and has a ‘Terrific Transport’ event on during the holidays. It’s not somewhere that we’ve explored before and I am keen to go. There is also a Bangers ‘n’ Mashup family party at Hockley Social Club which sounds like a lot of fun!

Gigs in Birmingham

Events in Birmingham naturally stretch to cover gigs of which there are plenty spread throughout the numerous city centre venues. Whilst most gigs are aimed at an adult audience, if you head to the Hare and Hounds on a Sunday through to Thursday you are permitted to take a child aged 14 and above with you for gigs. The Blue Piano on Harborne Road also has a matinee gig with performers Ricky Cool and the In Crowd. It’s on Sunday 10th September, so not quite in the summer holidays but close enough that we might all still be in need of a different daytime focus to stop ourselves (stop the boys) from tripping over each other.

Final thoughts

These events in Birmingham and ideas for outings are just the tip of the iceberg. Digging through pages of ideas on the internet throws up numerous suggestions. Only thing now is to decide which ones to squeeze in to the remaining weeks of the summer holidays, and which could be accommodated during an autumnal weekend. That said, the current weather feels as though we might have hit that stage of the year already!
