“Flora Air is passionate about writing and she dreams of becoming an author, but she’s in a fog with her mundane day job. She meets a charismatic professor who nurtures her writing and suddenly her dreams seem possible. A touch of magic at the professor’s home adds old-fashioned charm and enchantment to Flora’s writing journey. When she realises she loves the married professor, her journey takes a wild turn. Can Flora actually succeed in becoming an author? What happens to the love Flora Air feels for the professor?”
So, what did I think?
This novel sets out with a heartwarming plot line. An aspiring author, Flora finds herself facing the infamous writer’s block and sets out to clear her head, stumbling upon a hotel in her travels where she has a chance meeting with university lecturer Professor Oliver Jolly. A firm friendship quickly builds between the two, and through his encouragement Flora overcomes obstacles to find her words and her story. Through Flora Air, Janice Cairns showcases her remarkably unique writing style as the audience join Flora in her search for inspiration, making friends and finding magic along the way.
I felt as a reader however, that we were missing her personal story. I should have loved the characterisation to be stronger – who is Flora? Why did she start to write? These questions largely go un-answered. Characters on the periphery are dealt with only a passing glance, opportunities to build sub plots seem somewhat lost. There is a magic in this story which is fun and provides light intrigue, but never really gathers pace and doesn’t seem particularly well suited to what is otherwise a romantic, feel good novel.
I did find myself rooting for Flora’s success, with both her writing and building her own confidence and character through her changing personal relationships, but equally I didn’t feel as though I really connected to her. That said, the story will stay with me and I will recall the magical library scenes with fondness.
