I am absolutely delighted to be bringing you a review of Never Fall For Your Fiancée on its publication day! Thank you to Virginia Heath for gifting me an e-copy of the book in exchange for my honest opinion.
About The Book
The trouble with lies is they have a tendency to catch a man out.
The last thing Hugh Standish, Earl of Fareham, wants is a wife. But since the only way to keep his mother’s matchmaking ways at bay is the promise of impending nuptials, Hugh takes the most logical action: he invents a fake fiancée.
It’s the perfect plan – until Hugh learns that his mother is on a ship bound for England to meet his ‘beloved’. He needs a solution fast, and when he collides with a mysterious beauty, he might just have found the answer to his prayers.
Minerva Merriwell is desperate for money to support her sisters, and although she knows that posing as the Earl’s fiancée might seem nonsensical, it’s just too good an offer to refuse.
As the Merriwells descend upon Hugh’s estate, the household is thrown into turmoil as everyone tries to keep their tangled stories straight. And with Hugh and Minerva’s romantic ruse turning into the real thing, is true love just one complication too many?
‘Filled with fabulously British banter, wit, and heart,
this delightful book is one of my must-read rom-coms of the year’
What did I think?
This charming 19th century romantic comedy had me hooked from the first pages. Reading the blurb you can predict almost every twist and turn. Nevertheless there is a lot of joy and humour to be found as we chart the course of an Earl and his fake fiancée.
Struggling to get his mother off his back about settling down and starting a family, Hugh Standish, Earl of Fareham, invents a fake fiancée. When his mother announces that she and her husband are bound for England from America to meet his betrothed, he needs to think on his feet and find the perfect someone to play the part. Hugh has created such a convoluted love story that his mother fully expects to catch him out in his lie. Whilst she is en route via the Atlantic, Hugh is attempting to cover his dishonesty by engaging the services of Minerva Merriwell, a struggling woodcut engraver. Only one slight problem, Minerva has two younger sisters who need to play their parts too, and their ‘mother’ is not their relation at all but a hired local actor who enjoys a drink or three.
As a reader you know that there will be close calls, some elements will unravel and parts of the story will seem far fetched for Hugh’s mother’s, Olivia’s, sharp eye. Despite this the story is told with an abundance of good humour and clever observations. The pace is light and quick and the characters are well developed and consistent.
This is the first of three stories about the Merriwell sisters, and I am already looking forward to the next instalment!

About The Author
When Virginia Heath was a little girl it took her ages to fall asleep, so she made up stories in her head to help pass the time while she was staring at the ceiling. As she got older, the stories became more complicated, sometimes taking weeks to get to the happy ending. Then one day, she decided to embrace the insomnia and start writing them down. Twenty-two books and two Romantic Novel of the Year Award nominations later, and it still takes her forever to fall asleep.
