About the book

My name is Amber Ryan.
I’m in prison, but I’m innocent.
And I’ve been jailed not just for a crime I didn’t commit, but for a crime that never even happened.
Now, my friend is going to try to prove it.
But to do that, she has to go back.
Back to the dark.

What do I think?

Fans of crime fiction will find elements of The Life Sentence storyline and its characters vaguely familiar. The story arcs feel predictable but Kabler’s writing keeps the unfolding drama interesting. Elements of the book felt very well researched, especially around potential police involvement and legal processes. The characters are consistent and likeable. The main protagonist, Heather, whilst undertaking a task that doesn’t seem to fit with her steady gut instinct, is carefully and consistently written.

The Life Sentence moves between narrative voices and points of view throughout which worked well. I would have liked to have seen this movement happen a little more swiftly at times to pick up the pace, but it still gave a good feel to the entire scenario from other perspectives.

There is a twist at the end (no spoilers here!) which I felt genuinely sad about. As a reader although I would have questioned whether the character actions were always plausible, they were engagingly and persuasively written.

I enjoyed this book. Reading it across just three sittings I felt drawn to finding out if my suspicions were accurate and what information was thrown out by the next arc of the storyline. I also found myself desperate to know how it would resolve!

If you are looking for a new crime fiction to dive into, I would recommend this as an easy but enjoyable read.
