The Spice Pioneer is a meal kit delivered to your door, complete with spices and recipes along with a postcard from the meal inspired location. There is even a playlist to accompany your cooking! When I was asked to take a look at a couple of these boxes for inclusion on my 2018 Christmas Gift Guide I jumped at the chance.
I love cooking, and I love cooking new recipes. I’ll be honest though, over the past few months in particular I have felt stuck in a bit of a rut. Cooking the same dishes over and over again my motivation and creativity in the kitchen was slowly ebbing away. I struggle a little with recipes that keep me on my feet by the cooker for hours on end and with the strength and pain in my hands varying daily it is difficult to plan meals in advance that may involve lifting heavy pans and doing lots of chopping. I was pleasantly surprised that The Spice Pioneer recipes were quick and easy to prepare. The instructions were simple too, one thing prepared and in the oven, the next steps were easy to follow.
The dishes were not ones that I had cooked before but the results were very impressive. For such a short amount of time the taste was super and the food, cooked following the recipe very carefully was really tasty. The kit and recipe served 4, and there was enough food to have leftovers the following day. Even the boys enjoyed tucking in! In fact I have to say that it was one of the nicest meals I have cooked in a long time. It was so much fun to try out a new recipe.
Fresh ingredients and some cupboard staples are required such as flour and vegetables, but the spices are provided and quantities clearly labelled. I swapped a couple of ingredients to make the meal vegan (using a meat alternative and dairy free yoghurt) but there was no compromise on taste. My meat eating husband thoroughly enjoyed the meal too. In fact he thought it must have taken hours to prepare!
Vouchers for The Spice Pioneer would make an excellent gift choice for the chef in your life at any time. Prices vary depending on how many months you buy but are in the region of £8 or £9 per month. You do of course need to factor in the fresh ingredients required but effectively you are buying a meal once a month that will introduce your recipient to some fabulous recipes and tastes from around the world. With the playlist on in the background it could even become the basis for a regular dinner club!
